Victorian Sideboard. Mahogeny veneer with three bays (3 drawers, 3 cabinets). Made in Ellicott City by Bernard Fort (born July 24, 1810 and died 1896) who emigrated from England in 1830. He was a cabinetmaker and undertaker in Ellicott City. This piece is in typically heavy architectural form of the Empire Style, but its decoration is minimal and simple and points to its rural roots lending it a particular charm when compared to the more high style Baltimore Empire Sideboards. Donated in memory of Katherine Virginia Craggs Hynes (Great Granddaughter of Bernard Fort) by Katherine Virginia Hynes Crist (daughter) and Frances Heine Craggs Card (aunt).
